The Experience

This is the Mackenzie Country at its most colourful — and its most exclusive

Each November and December, the Mackenzie Basin turns a colour it wears for only a few short weeks. Wild lupins spread through the high country in drifts of purple, pink and blue, and for a brief season the landscape becomes something worth crossing the world to see. Most visitors experience this from the roadside. This safari takes you somewhere else entirely.

Travelling in a luxury 4WD with your experienced local guide, you'll leave the public roads behind and head into private high-country stations across the Mackenzie Basin — working land that carries no signage, no crowds, and no public access. Here the lupins grow wild and largely undiscovered, scattered through hidden valleys and along the edges of braided rivers, glacial lakes and alpine tussock basins that few travellers ever set foot in.

The drive itself is a journey through the geology and history of the high country. Glacial processes carved these valleys over tens of thousands of years, leaving behind the braided rivers, moraine and alpine lakes that define the Mackenzie today. Farming has shaped it since — the stations you'll pass through are still working merino country, their musterers' huts and yards a living link to the region's high-country heritage. Your guide brings all of it together as you go: the ice-age origins of the landscape, the conservation work protecting its rare species, and the stories of the families who've worked this land for generations.

With Aoraki/Mt Cook, Lake Tekapo, Twizel and Lake Ōhau forming the backdrop, and lupins woven through nearly every view, this is one of the most photogenic days out New Zealand has to offer — and one of the least crowded.

A Day in the High Country

The day unfolds at a relaxed pace, built around the landscape rather than a fixed itinerary. There's no rush between stops — plenty of time is set aside to pull over, walk out into a field of wild lupins, and simply take in the scale of the country around you. Where your guide takes you on the day depends on where the lupins are flowering best, so every safari is a little different.

At the midpoint of the day, you'll stop for a gourmet picnic lunch in a spectacular backcountry setting — mountains on every side, and not another visitor in sight. It's here that your guide shares the deeper stories of the Mackenzie Country: its glacial geology, its farming heritage, the conservation efforts protecting species like the endangered black stilt/kākī, and the natural history that makes this basin unlike anywhere else in New Zealand.
