Location

Mackenzie High Country

A 2-day journey into the vast and untouched high country of New Zealand’s Southern Alps — far beyond the tourist trail…

A two-day journey across private high-country stations in the Mackenzie Basin, connecting Lake Tekapo, Aoraki/Mt Cook, Lake Ōhau and the remote landscapes of Twizel. This is a part of New Zealand few travellers ever experience. Travelling by premium 4WD expedition vehicle, you move beyond public roads and into privately owned stations, crossing alpine valleys, braided rivers and expansive high-country terrain shaped by generations of pastoral life. Access is granted through long-established local relationships — opening gates to landscapes that remain closed to most.

Positioned as a fully private high-country safari, this experience offers a level of access and immersion rarely found in New Zealand’s Southern Alps.

The Experience

This is a journey through landscape, not a series of stops.

This journey is designed to reveal the scale and quiet of the Mackenzie high country. You’ll travel through a sequence of contrasting landscapes — from the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki beneath Aoraki/Mt Cook, to the open basins and ridgelines surrounding Lake Ōhau, and into the working stations that define this region.

There is time to stop, walk, photograph, and take in the detail — the textures of tussock, the movement of weather across the ranges, and the history held in remote musterers’ huts and station tracks. Your guide brings context to the land — its people, its use, and its rhythm.

Along the way, the landscape reveals a series of remote alpine tarns and glacially formed lakes, shaped during the last Ice Age when vast glaciers carved through the Mackenzie Basin — leaving behind the braided rivers, wide valleys, and distinctive landforms that define this remarkable high-country environment today. These glacial processes have created one of New Zealand’s most unique alpine landscapes — vast, open, and shaped by time.

The Mackenzie Basin is also home to a unique and fragile ecosystem. Braided riverbeds and alpine wetlands provide habitat for some of New Zealand’s rarest birdlife, including the endangered Black Stilt (Kākī) — one of the world’s rarest wading birds — as well as banded dotterels and wrybills, often seen along the river systems. In more remote alpine areas, there is also the possibility of encountering introduced high-country wildlife such as Himalayan tahr and red deer, adding another dimension to the experience.

Journey into the heart of New Zealand’s most beautiful landscapes of the Mackenzie Country

As Night Falls

This is backcountry Star Gazing at its finest! With no light pollution and nothing but open landscape around you, the night sky here feels immense — a quiet, unforgettable experience of the Mackenzie at its most raw and untouched.”

As evening settles across the Mackenzie Basin, the landscape shifts into one of the world’s most remarkable stargazing environments. Located within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve — one of the largest and most pristine dark sky reserves on Earth — the night sky above Lake Tekapo and the Mt Cook region reveals extraordinary clarity and depth. Far from artificial light, guests experience true New Zealand stargazing, where the Milky Way, Southern Cross, and countless constellations appear vivid and uninterrupted across the alpine sky.

Spending the night in this remote setting offers a rare opportunity to experience true stargazing in the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve — one of the best places on Earth to see the night sky.

Accommodation

Set deep within the Mackenzie high country, your overnight stay is in a newly built, private high-country cabin, positioned among the vast alpine landscapes surrounding Aoraki/Mt Cook.

Designed in the spirit of the high country, the cabin features solid timber construction, exposed wooden beams, and warm natural interiors, creating a space that feels grounded, authentic, and connected to the land. The high, open ceilings and handcrafted detailing reflect traditional high-country design, while offering a sense of space, warmth, and quiet comfort.

Set in complete privacy, surrounded by open high-country landscape, the cabin offers a rare sense of space and seclusion.

Inside, guests enjoy a separate king bedroom, custom-built bunks for families, and a fully equipped kitchen, all styled with fresh linen and thoughtful touches. A wood-burning fire brings warmth and atmosphere as evening settles across the surrounding ranges.

Facilities are located just outside, with a separate shower room and thoughtfully designed outdoor bathroom, maintaining a genuine connection to the landscape while still providing comfort and privacy.

Private, remote, and thoughtfully designed — this is high-country living at its most authentic.
