Frequently Asked Questions

What level of fitness is required for the Mackenzie Alpine Hiking Tour?

You should be able to hike for 5-7 hours, carrying a backpack weighing around 7kgs, and feel comfortable on uneven terrain, including some uphill sections. It's recommended to have a reasonable level of fitness with good cardio output and be accustomed to uphill walking.

What type of accommodation can I expect?

Our backcountry huts are private & exclusive. They are newly built, offering a rustic yet comfortable stay in the Mackenzie Alpine.

They are 8- 10 bunk huts, with thick sleep mats laid out in a bunk room style configuration.

You will be sleeping in a bunk bed, that is open plan to the kitchen and main living areas. The huts are small inside but cozy and clean, and have lovely log fires so you will be warm at night.

The huts are situated in the most picturesque areas, offering fabulous views over the mountains and glaciers. Each hut has a table outside for making the most of a cheers and the dining experience!

These huts were originally created for backcountry skiing expeditions, so they even have boot drying racks.

Private huts mean nobody else will be there, but your private group of fellow hikers.

What kind of food can we expect?

We’re foodies ourselves, and really enjoy flavoursome hearty healthy meals after a great day in the mountains. We are a quality driven company offering value from start to finish.

Breakfasts consist of Oatmeal & fresh fruits and nuts and maple syrup.

Lunches are out hiking, consisting of wraps, hummus, cheeses, deli meats and fresh veggies

Dinners are locally made Venison stews, or home made curries with heaps of delicious flavours.

Snacks are a mix of homemade muffins, bars, fruit, quality Chocolate

Can I bring wine?

Yes of course! What better way to enjoy a cheers than in some of the finest scenery in New Zealand. You can bring wine, or whiskey etc but you must be willing to carry it. We advise to decanter the alcohol in a plastic bottle or extra plastic carrier of somesort.

What if I'm not in good enough shape?

This hiking experience does require a hiker that is comfortable with uneven terrain and hiking uphill. It is not a flat walk in the park- however if you have been training and are in relatively good shape- you should really enjoy this wilderness hiking tour.

Can we book this tour and stay in one location vs. going from hut to hut?

Yes, depending on your level of fitness or aims of getting into the backcountry, we often offer this tour as an overnight in the same hut vs moving daily hut- hut. This offers people a similar experience, but just day hiking or enjoying the space without having to be as physical. There are plenty of beautiful options to enjoy just by staying in one hut, nearby waterfalls, bird life, mountain scenery or enjoying a good book to name a few!

What's included in the price?

The tour price includes transport from Lake Tekapo (pick-up and drop-off at your hotel), a scenic 4WD drive through Cass Valley, 2 nights' accommodation in our private backcountry alpine huts, all meals and snacks on the trail (2 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 2 dinners, and snacks), a 40-liter backpack, a sleeping bag liner, and experienced hiking guides.

What's not included?

Not included in the tour price are transport to and from Lake Tekapo outside the tour, accommodation on Day 0 & Day 3, alcoholic beverages, extra snacks or coffees, and extra gear for hire (e.g., Hiking Poles, Gaiters). Please contact us if you require any additional gear.

What should I wear and bring?

You will need proper hiking boots with a 1.5-inch step and adequate ankle support. No trainers, running shoes, or low-ankle hikers. It's also recommended to train and hike with the boots and socks you plan to use to ensure they are adequately broken in. Carrying a small backpack with a weight of 7-10kg during training is advisable to simulate the hike's conditions.

What's the weather like?

Expect four seasons in one day. The Mackenzie backcountry can be very exposed, leading to extremely hot days in the sun and cold nights. Winds can be strong, creating a semi-desert-like landscape with very hot and dry temperatures during the summer season (December - March). There's also a lack of tree cover, so it can get very sunny and hot at times.

Are there river crossings?

Yes, the tour includes crossing the Cass River and various small streams along the journey. Your guides will lead these crossings with great care and experience. Expect to have wet feet and boots.

Can I hire extra gear?

Yes, we have extra gear available for hire, such as hiking poles and gaiters. It's highly suggested to use hiking poles for this terrain. If you need any extra gear, please contact us before your trip.

What's the terrain like?

The hike covers true backcountry nature with no groomed trails. You'll encounter gravel river beds, golden tussock grasslands, rocky scree, and uneven surfaces, requiring a sure-footed approach. The terrain includes gradual climbs, some steep sections, and stream crossings.

How do I prepare for the hike?

Training on uneven terrain and hill walks is suggested. Stair walking can be a reasonable substitute, but hiking uphill is preferable for adequate preparation. Ensure your hiking boots are properly broken in, and consider training with a weighted backpack. Using hiking poles and gators during training is also recommended for familiarity.

Our whole group had a fantastic time on our all day safari trip! Ben was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. He answered any and all of our questions about the beautiful landscape and was very attentive to our needs. We got to enjoy a provided picnic lunch, drink fresh water from a stream, see a flock of merino sheep, and go on a short hike to a waterfall. I highly recommend the trip!

Last week I was lucky to do the Autumn Muster Tour up through Glenmore Station and the Cass Valley with Tekapo Adventures. It was a stunner of a day to be driving deep into the stunning Mackenzie high country with these guys bring the merinos down from the mountains to lower ground for winter. Chris was such a great guide for the day and I highly recommend anyone who gets the opportunity to take one of the Tours through Tekapo Adventures to just do it!!!

A group of 7 did the over night hike. Tekapo Adventures took great care in planning our hike to accommodate all our abilities. We drove for over 2 hours on a 4WD track to the start of the hike. Once parked We were soon crossing rivers before starting the ascent to The Lady Emily hut. The views were out of this world! Our guides Christina and Chris were incredibly knowledgeable, fun and went out of their way to look after us. Whilst the hike was steep, we never felt our safety was at all compromised. The food provided by Christina was tasty and plentiful, the hut was warm and clean. We didn’t see another person for the whole trip, it really was the most magnificent guided backcountry hike Ive ever done. Can’t wait to do the next and simply can’t recommend this trip enough!

Every aspect thought through and delivered so well, from pre departure meeting and gear check which also doubled as ‘meet your guides’; 4x4 trip with fantastic history, commentary and dad jokes from Chris; delicious fresh and home cooked food by Christina; encouragement and teamwork; to magnificent views and back country experience like no other. Christina and Chris 10/10. Epic experience!!
